🎼 About Queer Voices of Colour 👨🏿‍🎤

“Growing up in Trinidad in the Caribbean, I was a soloist in the Catholic Church Choirs where my beautiful Black Trinbagonian Grandmother Ivy Telfer played the Church organ. My studied music and musical theatre gaining skills and performing around the world with Trinidad Tent Theatre. I then left Trinidad on the advice of Nina Simone who I spent time with in 1984 when she visited Trinidad, and moved to London to pursue a career in performing. Being mixed race, no one knew how to cast me so I left performing and now I work in LGBTQ+ human rights. But I always missed performing.

Looking recently at LGBTQ+ choirs in London, I realised there was a very serious lack of diversity in the choirs and many in the chorale community admitted that they were struggling to to recruit QTPOC to their groups.

After some investigation, I realised that there was a need for a QTPOC choir that was truly DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE! So I decided that if I couldn’t find the Queer choir that I felt I belonged in, then I should just create that myself! In less than 72 hours of launching, we have over 20 members who represent 10 cultural backgrounds! And we’ve been invited to participate in 3 events!

So I am tremendously thrilled by the response and excited for the future of Queer Voices Of Colour! The UK’s FIRST QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOUR CHOIR!”
